'I ran out of tears’: Yazidi schoolgirl reveals how she was raped every day for 6 months by an ‘ugly beast’ of an ISIS jihadi when she was just 14

(Daily Mail) A Yazidi schoolgirl has revealed her horrifying story of how she was kidnapped and used as a sex slave by ISIS fighters when she was just 14.

Ekhlas was captured along with thousands of Yazidi women when ISIS jihadis swept through northern Iraq in 2014.

She tried to escape to Mount Sinjar, where 50,000 members of the long-persecuted sect had fled.

But, talking to Victoria Derbyshire, she revealed how she was raped every day for six months by jihadis.

Now 16, Ekhlas said: 'My life was beautiful but two hours changed my life. They came with their black flag. They killed our men and raped our girls.

'They killed my father in front of my own eyes. I saw blood on their hands. All I heard was screaming and crying, everyone was starving, they weren't feeding anyone.

'I saw a man who was over 40 take a 10-year-old girl. The girl was screaming. I'll never forget those screams.'

Ekhlas was chosen as a sex slave out 150 girls by a jihadi when he drew lots and kept for six months.

She said: 'He was so ugly, like a beast, with his long hair. He smelt so bad. I was so frightened I couldn't look at him.

'Every day for six months he raped me. I tried to kill myself. How am I telling you this without crying? I tell you I ran out of tears.'

But Ekhlas managed to remain strong because she said, 'my smile was my weapon'.

She managed to miraculously escape her abuser when he was out fighting and found her way to a refugee camp.

There she met Jacqueline Isaac, an American lawyer, and was resettled in Germany three months later.

Jacqueline said: 'When I first met her, her head was down, all of their heads were down. There was no eye contact in the beginning.'

Ehklas is now receiving therapy at a psychiatric hospital for her trauma, but she says she wants to be a lawyer in the future.

She added: 'You probably think I am as strong as a rock but I want you to know I am wounded inside. I have my pain and it's like 100 deaths.'

Nearly 10,000 Yazidis were killed or captured when ISIS took over Mount Sinjar in the summer of 2014.

An estimated thirty per cent of that number were executed by gunshot, beheading or being burned alive.

ISIS Burns Christians Alive in Locked Caskets, Escaped Prisoner Reveals

(CP) An Iraqi soldier who escaped from an Islamic State prison has described the terror group's brutal torture of Christians, many of whom died during the torture.

"They tortured the [expletive] out of the Christians and some died in the process," Sergeant Karam Saad of the Iraqi military, who was held captive in June 2014, told Independent Journal.

"They would take some and lock them in a kind of casket, and set it on fire from the inside," he added. "I only spent three nights in prison. During that time, I paid attention to how many guards were on duty and any signs of weaker security."

IS, an offshoot of al-Qaeda, seeks to establish a caliphate in the Levant region and beyond. The Sunni terror group controls many parts of Iraq and Syria, and Christians are among their civilian targets.

Saad criticized President Barack Obama's strategy to fight IS, which mainly involves airstrikes by an international coalition.

"The airstrikes are not effective and there are really no functional operations. The coalition is [expletive]! They might get a couple good shots here or there, but for the most part it's not an effective strategy," he was quoted as saying.

"In the future, I feel that the Republicans will be more effective to battle ISIS than the Democrats. … Since 1991, the Republicans have been better allies than Democrats. The Democrats have a stupid strategy. I had spent a long time on the battlefield with the Republicans politics and we've had way more victories in the fight."

He added: "Under the Obama administration, America is not taking this fight seriously."

Saad also narrated how he managed to escape.

"The bathroom had a window with access to the roofs," he said. "In Iraq, the rooftops are flat, so you can jump from roof to roof. Every once in a while, IS would speed off in their cars in search of more prisoners, and only leave a couple guards behind.

"So I stole a spoon and turned it into a knife, with the intention to kill one of the guards. I asked him to take me to the bathroom. But as I was making my way there, I noticed another guard who had been left behind was armed with a gun, so killing was out of the question.

"I went to the bathroom and managed to knock out the IS fighter and put him a rear-naked choke. Then I made it onto the roofs, and escaped."

IS terrorists believe Islam allows, or mandates them, to persecute non-Muslim minorities or even Muslims who do not obey them.

They also believe Islam allows them to rape non-Muslim women and girls.

A 12-year-old girl interviewed by The New York Times at a refugee camp in Qadia, Iraq, last year said an IS terrorist prayed before and after raping her and sought to explain to her that the Quran encourages such sexual assaults.

"I kept telling him it hurts — please stop," the girl was quoted as saying. "He told me that according to Islam he is allowed to rape an unbeliever. He said that by raping me, he is drawing closer to God."

More than 5,000 Yazidis were abducted last year, and at least 3,144 are still being held.

"Every time that he came to rape me, he would pray," another victim, a 15-year-old girl, was quoted as saying. "He kept telling me this is ibadah (worship). He said that raping me is his prayer to God. I said to him, 'What you're doing to me is wrong, and it will not bring you closer to God.' And he said, 'No, it's allowed. It's halal.'"

(CP) The Islamic State terror group, which publicly justifies and brags about raping Yazidi sex-slaves, has reportedly traded women and young girls for as little as 10 cigarettes.

Activist and director of media at the University of Duhok, Khidher Domle, told NBC News that some women are "sold for weapons, or for just $10, or 10 cigarettes."

Domle, who's interviewed dozens of escaped Yazidis in Iraq, said it helps to learn about their use of sex-slaves, adding that the women are often sold three or four times to different IS fighters on the battlefield.

The NBC News report further revealed that girls as young as 7 have been kidnapped by the militants.

According to the Independent, more than 2,000 Yazidi women are enslaved by the militants.

In 2014, a pamphlet published by IS declared it permissible to beat, trade, and have sex with young non-Muslim girls. The pamphlet added, "A male or female slave running away is among the gravest of sins."

The guide book claims that it is appropriate to have sex with young girls who have not reached puberty "if she is fit for intercourse."

Earlier this month, mass graves of 80 Yazidi women were found by Kurdish forces on the edge of Sinjar, Iraq, in the country's Nineveh Province.

A recent report by the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. states that the "Islamic State has been and is perpetrating genocide against the Yazidi people."

According to The Washington Post, the crisis in Darfur was the last time the Holocaust Museum classified a world event as genocide.

The report stated of Christians in Ninewa: "Assyrian Chaldean Christian communities have lived in northern Iraq, primarily in Ninewa, since the emergence of Christianity. Some are believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited Christian communities. The Christian population has dwindled from nearly 1.5 million in 2003 to fewer than 350,000 today."

The Christian Post previously reported on Nina Shea's efforts to have the Obama administration include Christians amongst those suffering genocide by the Islamic State amidst reports the White House is expected to extend the status to Yazidis. Shea is director of Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom and a longtime advocate for persecuted Christians around the globe.

The promise of sex slaves is often an appealing recruiting tactic for leaders of IS to attract new fighters. Yazidis, who profess an ancient pre-Islamic monotheism are considered to be heretics and "devil worshippers" by the Islamic State.

The brutality against Yazidi women is so horrific that CP reported last month that a witness claims hundreds of girls and women have committed suicide rather than be subjected to forced sexual slavery under the control of the IS.

Some fighters believe that their rape of Yazidis and other religious minorities is a prayer to God and that their rape act draws them closer to God.

The religious group mostly found in Southern Turkey, Northern Iraq, and parts of Syria. It is believed that there are 500,000 Yazidis in the region.

Kurdish forces seize Iraq's Sinjar town from Islamic State

(Iraq) Kurdish forces supported by US airstrikes continue on their fightback against ISIS by taking back the Yazidi town of Sinjar.

Sinjar, which was captured by ISIS in August 14, brought ISIS to the prominence of the world with pictures of the Yazidi minority seeking shelter on the slopes of Mount Sinjar. With the recapture of the town, evidence is slowly emerging of the cruelty of ISIS towards the Yazidis, with a number of mass graves being unearthed.

Now would be a good time for the world to rebuild this town in which to allow the Yazidis to return to their homeland.

(Daily Mail) Pregnant women abducted and sold as sex slaves by Islamic State fighters have been forced to undergo abortions leaving them unable to move or speak, freed Yazidi girls have revealed.

ISIS jihadists would bring their own gynaecologists to 'slave markets' in the Sinjar region of Iraq where captured Yazidi women who were found to be pregnant would be subjected to painful abortions so they could be used for sex.

One woman, Bushra, 21, revealed that her friend was three months pregnant when she was captured, and that ISIS forced her to undergo a termination.

'Afterwards, they brought her back. I asked her what happened and how they did it. She said the doctors told her not to speak,' Bushra told CNN.

The young woman was bleeding heavily after the forced abortion, which left her in so much pain that 'she could not talk or walk.'

Another young Yazidi escapee, Noor, revealed that the jihadist she was sold to waited two days before he forced himself on her.

'He showed me a letter and said 'This shows any captured women will become Muslim if ten ISIS fighters rape her.''

She told CNN that he proceeded to rape her before passing her on to 11 fellow fighters who all forced themselves on her.

Yazidis urge ICC to open probe into ISIS atrocities, ICC says no

The Hague (AFP) - Iraq's Yazidi minority -- the target of brutal attacks by the Islamic State group -- on Thursday urged the International Criminal Court to investigate the militants for allegations of genocide and sexual slavery.

Two Yazidi groups handed the court a new report and documents which show "that ISIS has systematically committed atrocities amounting to genocide and that these crimes fall within the jurisdiction of the ICC," said Murad Ismael of the Yazidi rights organisation Yazda.

Earlier this year, ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said the IS group, which is sometimes referred to as ISIS or ISIL, had committed crimes of "unspeakable cruelty" including mass executions, rape and torture.

But she said she could not investigate as neither Iraq nor Syria are signatories to the court and her "jurisdictional basis... is too narrow."

The report, however, specifically names some 20 foreign fighters from countries who have signed the ICC's founding Rome Statute.

Islamic State sells 42 Yazidi women to jihadists in Syria

Beirut (AFP) - The Islamic State group on Thursday sold 42 Iraqi women it had abducted from the Yazidi religious minority to its fighters in eastern Syria, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the women were being treated as "slaves" by the jihadists and were sold "for between $500 (447 euros) and $2,000 dollars (1,785 euros)".

The women were kidnapped last year in the Sinjar region of northern Iraq where IS had launched a wide offensive, the Britain-based monitor said.

Earlier this month they were brought to the IS-held town of Mayadeen in Syria's eastern Deir Ezzor province.

"Some were abducted with their children but we do not know their fate," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

(Daily Mail) A woman was burned alive by depraved Islamic State militants after she refused to take part in an 'extreme sex act', a United Nations official has revealed.

Hundreds of women have been kidnapped by jihadi fighters who send the 'prettiest virgins' to slave markets in the Syrian city of Raqqa, where they are sold as sexual objects to the highest bidder.

Many are stripped naked and forced to undergo virginity tests before being sent to the twisted auctions, the UN's Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict has said.

Zainab Bangura discovered the gruesome extent of crimes against young women – particularly from Iraq's Yazidi minority community – after collecting information from Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

She said: 'They (ISIS) commit rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution and other acts of extreme brutality.

'We heard one case of a 20-year-old girl who was burned alive because she refused to perform an extreme sex act. We learned of many other sadistic sexual acts.'

ISIS has carried out 'systematic sexual crimes' against Yazidi women and girls after kidnapping over 200 of them from their homes in northern Iraq last August, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said.

According to the Yazidi Progress Party, hundreds were murdered by Isis on Friday in the Tal Afar district.

It comes after around 40,000 people were kidnapped at gunpoint when the terrorists attacked Yazidi villages last summer.

Iraq: 'Nine-year-old pregnant' after being raped by at least 10 Islamic State jihadists

(Daily Express) GIRLS as young as nine are being raped and tortured by Islamic State militants, according to aid workers in Iraq.

Hundreds of Yazidi women and children who were taken hostage by the brutal regime were released this week after more than eight months in captivity.

But volunteers in huge make-shift refugee camps have given a distressing account of trauma and abuse at the hand of the jihadist group, which continues to wage a bloody war across the region.

Charity workers said one nine-year-old girl, who was left pregnant after being raped by at least 10 different men, was so young and weak she was likely to die during childbirth.

“Even a caesarean section is dangerous,” Yousif Daoud, a Canadian-based aid worker who recently returned from the region, said.

“The abuse she has suffered left her mentally and physically traumatised.”

The freed group of 200 girls and women was taken hostage last summer after intense fighting in northern Iraq.

Tens of thousands of Yazidis – a minority group based mainly in the Kurdistan region of the country – were attacked and besieged on a mountain side in August 2014.

Hundreds were killed during the fighting and estimates put the number of girls still being held by extremist fighters at up to 4,000.

Aid workers said releasing the 200-strong group of girls and women this week might have been done simply to shame them when they returned to their families.

“Sending back those girls and women is a way of shaming the whole community,” Mr Daoud said.

“I don’t know what the future would be for their babies.

“The girls and women don’t want them. They have suffered so much they just want to forget.

“If they are married, their husbands won’t take them back if they are pregnant. And it’s clear that the babies will never be accepted.”

There are fears that some of the pregnant women will attempt to have an abortion, but healthcare provisions are so poor that many will die in the process, aid workers claim.

Yazidi militia makes public request for Israeli help

Kurdish religious minority ‘loves the Jewish people,’ says commander, as he tries to fight the Islamic State.

(Times of Israel) An official in a militia organized by Iraq’s Kurdish Yazidi minority has issued a public call for Israeli assistance.

Lt. Col. Lukman Ibrahim, speaking to Al-Monitor, said the militia needs weapons and aid, and would like Israeli assistance so it can fight Islamic State, or ISIS. He said the Yazidis support Israel and fight similar enemies.

Israel has yet to respond to the Yazidi request.

The militia, with 12,000 members, was organized in August to defend against ISIS, which has persecuted and killed the minority since capturing Yazidi cities last year. Most of the fighters are untrained.

“We appeal to the Israeli government and its leader to step in and help this nation, which loves the Jewish people,” Ibrahim was quoted as saying by Al-Monitor. “We would be most grateful for the establishment of military ties — for instance, the training of fighters and the formation of joint teams. We are well aware of the circumstances the Israelis are in, and of the suffering they have endured at the hands of the Arabs ever since the establishment of their state. We, too, are suffering on account of them.”

A Yazidi doctor who lives in Germany said that Yazidis and Jews can also find common ground in both being victims of genocide.

“What happened to us is the biggest genocide since the Holocaust of the Jews in Europe,” said Dr. Mirza Dinnay, a pediatrician, told Al-Monitor. “In the Holocaust, the goal was to annihilate an entire people, the Jews. IS has a similar plan — to exterminate an entire people, the Yazidis.”

The Yazidi commander’s call echoed the pleas of a Yazidi father in Jerusalem, whose family was trapped by IS on Mt. Sinjar over the summer.

“I ask, in my name, and in the name of the Yazidis, that Israel and Europe help us against the Islamic State,” he said to the Times of Israel in August. “I ask that the State of Israel protect us from the Islamists, tens of thousands of people, my family alone is 20 people. Put it on Facebook, put it on YouTube.”

“I wish Netanyahu would let us live here,” he added. “I wish he would give the Yazidi some land.”

Yazidis are monotheists who follow an ancient syncretic Kurdish religion influenced by Zoroastrianism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. They number around 500,000, mostly in northern Iraq, Turkey, and Syria. Yazidis revere an archangel, Malek Taus (the Peacock Angel), whom they believe God entrusted to run the world after he refused to bow down to Adam.

Local Muslims, however, call them devil worshipers, because according to the Islamic version of the story, the angel who refused to bow down to Adam, Iblis, was cast down to hell, where he became Satan. Yazidis have long been persecuted by Muslims, and are often looked down on as uneducated and dirty. They do not let their children marry Muslims, and their society has seen high-profile honor killings of girls accused of pursuing relationships with Muslims.

The Yazidis’ tense history with Muslims makes them a prime target for the Islamic State. In August, IS issued an ultimatum to tens of thousands of people from the Yazidi community to convert to Islam, pay a religious fine and flee their homes, or face death. The UN mission in Iraq, known as UNAMI, said as many as 200,000 civilians, mostly Yazidis, fled to Mt. Sinjar, but were surrounded by militants and endangered. At least 40 children from those displaced from Sinjar were killed in the violence, UNICEF said.

During a parliamentary session in August, a Yazidi lawmaker broke down in tears as she urged the government and the international community to save her people from being massacred or starved into extinction.

“We are being slaughtered; our entire religion is being wiped off the face of the earth. I am begging you, in the name of humanity,” said Vian Dakhil.

Ties between Israel and the Kurds in general run deep. A Mossad officer named Sagi Chori was sent to help his close friend, the late iconic Kurdish leader Mulla Mustafa Barzani, manage the Kurds’ battles against the Iraqi army in the 1960s. (The partnership has been well-documented in Kurdish and Israeli media.) And reports of Israel training Kurdish commandos continue to surface. Nationalist Kurds tend to see Israel as a role model for an independent Kurdistan, a small nation surrounded by enemies and bolstered by a strategic partnership with the United States.

Israel has long developed alliances with non-Arab countries on the periphery of the Middle East. Today, that policy rests on partnerships with Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, and Caucasian and central Asian countries. Kurdistan fits perfectly into that framework.

If Kurds gain independence, they will likely open full diplomatic relations with Israel. “The Kurds are the only nation in the region that has not been filled with hatred toward Israel and America,” said Selam Saadi, chief editor of Kurdish news site Rudaw. “The way Kurds see the world is different from Arabs… Generally, Islamists are more powerful in the Arab world, they think that Islamic Sharia is the solution. However, the majority of Kurds believe in a European style of government. The problem is they don’t know how to get there. They don’t have experience.”

ISIS battle in Iraq kills 30 Kurds

BAGHDAD (AP) – Islamic State group fighters attempting to retake a town in northern Iraq held by Kurdish pershmerga forces have killed at least 30 Kurds, an Iraqi military spokesman said Sunday.

The fighting began Saturday as the extremists approached the town of Gwer, just outside of the northern city of Mosul, which the Islamic State group controls, said Halgurd Hekmat, a spokesman for Iraqi Kurdish forces in Irbil. Hekmat said he had no information about casualties suffered by the Islamic State group.

Backed by U.S.-led airstrikes, Kurdish forces retook Gwer in August after the Islamic State group's offensive saw it seize a wide swath of Iraq. Kurdish fighters from Iraq also have deployed in small numbers to help Syrian Kurds battle the group's fighters in the Syrian border town of Kobani.

Gwer sits near Irbil, the Kurdish regional capital. Retaking it would allow Islamic State group fighters a new base to potentially launch assaults targeting the city.

Earlier this month, peshmerga fighters also retook small villages around the militant-held town of Sinjar, opening a corridor to help hundreds of Yazidi families atop nearby Mount Sinjar.

The Islamic State group, which has declared a self-styled caliphate, holds about a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria.

On Saturday, the U.S. military said in a statement it carried out 12 strikes on the group in Syria and three strikes in Iraq. Eleven of the coalition airstrikes in Syria targeted Islamic State group positions around the border town of Kobani near Turkey.

Shocking video shows ISIS fighters bartering for young women at 'slave girl market'

New Delhi: A bunch of ISIS fighters sitting in a poorly-lit room which resounds with an ugly cacophony interspersed by giggles. What could it be? Are they cracking jokes or boasting about a recently carried out execution? No.

It is actually a scene out of the ISIS' slave market day – a day every fighter gets his “share” — a Yazidi girl — reads the translation on a YouTube video. It shows how the barbaric fighters bargain for woman slaves, explaining how the prices vary according to the girls' physical details; for instance - the colour of her eyes.

According to a video tweeted by an Arabic TV reporter whose Twitter handle is @ jenanmoussa, the ISIS fighters on their so-called “slave market day” also called the “distribution day”, get to buy or sell their women slaves.

The video starts with a man happily declaring, “Today is the slave market day”.

“Today is the day where this verse applies - 'Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed',” says a man dressed in black tunic.

Another fighter is seen shouting, “Where is my Yezidi girl? Where is my Yezidi girl? ”

“I swear man, I am searching for a girl. I hope I find her,” says another.

One of the ISIS fighters asks others if they are willing to sell their slaves. The video then shows some of the other jihadists who say they do not want their slaves and are ready to sell them.

Then starts the bargaining with one of the fighters willing to offer 1 banknote ($100) for a girl with blue eyes. Another raises the bid to 5 banknotes ($500) and demands a green-eyed Yezidi slave for the price.

An ISIS fighter who looks too keen to buy a girl expresses his concern over the age and physical appearance of his buy. He quips, “She doesn’t have teeth, why would I want her?”

"Put dentures for her...?" another fighter chips in.

The noisy bargaining is interspersed by giggles as a voice behind the camera asks a fighter (apparently a teenager) if he wants a girl and would he be able to handle her. The boy chuckles and nods, 'Yes'.

The video ends on a disturbing note as many ISIS fighters are seen huddled together with one saying: “Abu Fahd, Your Yezidi is dead”.

'Treated like cattle': Yazidi women sold, raped, enslaved by ISIS

Erbil, Iraq (CNN) -- Jana was a 19-year-old in her final year of high school, with dreams of becoming a doctor. Then, ISIS came to her village last August, and her world collapsed.

She described to me in chilling detail, how the jihadis first demanded that members of her Yazidi religious minority convert to Islam. Then they stripped villagers of their jewelry, money and cellphones. They separated the men from the women.

A United Nations report explained what happened next. ISIS "gathered all the males older than 10 years of age at the local school, took them outside the village by pick-up trucks, and shot them."

Among those believed dead were Jana's father and eldest brother.

A different fate lay in store for the women.

Jana described how girls like herself were separated from older women, then bussed to the city of Mosul.

There they were put in a big three-story house with hundreds of other young women. The men of ISIS came periodically, and chose up to three and four girls at a time to take home with them.

"These women have been treated like cattle," explained Nazand Begikhani, an adviser to the Kurdistan Regional Government on gender issues.

Islamic State militants advanced on Iraq’s Sinjar mountain on Tuesday, tightening a siege of thousands of stranded Yazidis, who called on the United States and its allies to act to avert more bloodshed.

The attack is the latest threat to minority Yazidis, thousands of whom have shot, buried alive or sold into slavery by IS militants, who regard them as devil-worshippers.

The IS militants originally attacked the area around Sinjar, in northwestern Iraq, in August. A renewed assault began at dawn on Monday, when militants driving Humvees and civilian vehicles attacked several Yazidi residential compounds, forcing the Yazidi to retreat up the mountain.

“We are outnumbered and outgunned. We don’t know how long we can hold them off,” said Ali Qasem, a Yazidi volunteer on the mountain.

Qasem said most families had already fled by the time IS arrived, but some could not leave and remained trapped in residential complexes to the east of the mountain.

Teen girls recall horrors of ISIS captivity

(NYP) Teenage girls who escaped the brutal clutches of ISIS terrorists have recounted a harrowing nightmare of beatings, torture, rape and degradation that included being forced to watch videos of men being beheaded.

The girls, members of the persecuted Yazidi minority from northern Iraq, say they were captured and sold or given as gifts.

“We would try to make ourselves look ugly,” an escaped girl, 15, told the Global Post news service. “Some women would cry or scream or fight, but it made no difference. They were always taken anyway.”

She said they were debased so badly that death, even by suicide, was more appealing than living under ISIS’s barbaric control.

“One girl hanged herself,” the teen said. “Another tried, but the ISIS guards stopped her and beat her very badly. No one else tried after that.”

One of the young victims said she became frail and sick because her guards gave them so little to eat.

Their captors also made them watch videos of beheadings of Yazidi men.

“In some [videos] they put the heads into cooking pots,” the anguished victim recalled. “Sometimes they would stand on them. There were so many heads. And they would ask us, ‘Do you know this one?’ and laugh.”

Another teen, a 19-year-old mother, said her ordeal began when she tried to flee from her village in the Sinjar region of Iraq with her husband and infant. ISIS vehicles caught up with them and others who were running, and forced the men to lie face-down on the ground.

The rebels executed boys as young as 14, she said. She watched as her husband was shot to death.

Clinging to her only child, the mother and other women were bundled into pickup trucks and taken to a holding facility. There, they were pressured to convert to Islam and given copies of the Quran.

“There was a big hall with three floors and each floor had five or six rooms,” the 15-year-old said. “They told us if we didn’t convert to Islam, they would kill all the men in our families, so we said to ourselves, ‘It’s just words. In our hearts we are still Yazidi.’ So I did it to save my brother.”

She and others managed to escape while their captors were away at prayers.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - In an act of solidarity with Yezidis made homeless and persecuted en masse by the Islamic State (IS/formerly ISIS) in Iraq, dozens of Kurdish intellectuals and activists announced they have symbolically converted to the faith.

“We become Yezidis to show the radical Muslims that their genocidal campaign would only increase the number of Yezidis in Kurdistan,” said a group of 48 intellectuals and activists in a joint statement.

They said that the Yezidis are “subjected to savage attacks only because they have a different religion.”

“Because of their non-Muslim faith they are killed en masse, their girls and women are enslaved and many of them have been forcefully converted to Islam,” their statement read.

IS militants attacked the Yezidi town of Shingal early this month, killing several hundred civilians and displacing tens of thousands to Mount Shingal, where many died of hunger and thirst.

“I feel like a Yezidi,” pronounced Frmesk Mustafa, a Kurdish actress. “I am one of them,” she said.

Mustafa, who has returned to Kurdistan from Norway to work with Yezidi refugees, said: “The aim is to make them return the girls. And to show that Yezidis have to remain with their faith without fear.”

The activists stressed in their statement that the Kurdistan Region has no room for religious intolerance, and that Yezidis are welcome as members of Kurdish society.

“One of the prides of the people of Kurdistan is their belief in religious and ethnic diversity where every individual can live together,” they said.

The group called on the people of Kurdistan, Iraq and the world to become Yezidis, albeit symbolically, in solidarity with the small and persecuted community.

“We want to tell the Yezidis and the people of the world that we will not leave the Yezidis to face a genocide alone,” read the statement.
