Hungary's leader calls Muslim migration 'Trojan horse' of terrorism

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Migration is the "Trojan wooden horse" of terrorism and the current lull in the migrant flow is only temporary, Hungary's prime minister said Tuesday

Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an early supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, has ordered the reinforcement of fences on Hungary's southern borders to keep out migrants. Orban says the migrants, many of whom are Muslims, are a threat to Europe's Christian identity and culture.

Orban said the migration issue would remain as long as its causes in the countries of origin were not dealt with and its potential risks were not recognized.

"Migration is the Trojan wooden horse of terrorism," Orban said at a swearing-in ceremony for a new group of border guards, called "border hunters" by the government. "The people that come to us don't want to live according to our culture and customs but according to their own — at European standards of living."

Hundreds of Muslim Invaders Marching Toward Hungary

(AP) Hundreds of migrants set off on foot on Tuesday toward Serbia's border with Hungary to protest its closure for most people trying to reach the European Union.

There are more than 6,000 migrants stuck in Serbia after Hungary this summer introduced strict limits to their crossing into the EU-member country and reinforced its razor-wire fence with heavy border patrols.

The so-called Balkan migrant route, last year used by nearly 1 million people fleeing wars and poverty, formally closed in March, forcing migrants to use alternative routes and pay people smugglers to get them across.

Hammer blow to Brussels as 92% of Hungarians reject EU migrant quotas

(Express) AN OVERWHELMING 92 per cent of Hungarian voters have rejected the imposition of Brussels migrant quotas in the country's referendum today.

The final result from the historic poll shows that more than nine in 10 voters rebelled against Jean-Claude Juncker's EU Commission in a crushing blow to the EU project.

In total 92.3 per cent of people voted 'no' to migrant quotas, compared to just 1.4 per cent who said yes. A further six per cent of the ballots were spoiled in protest.

Jubilant politicians from the ruling Fidesz party claimed victory in the historic vote shortly after polling stations closed and said it was a sign of people turning their backs on bullying Brussels.

Government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs roared: “The majority of the rejection to Brussels politics is overwhelming.”

He added: “As this referendum was initiated by the government, we have no other choice but to consider the citizens’ decision binding to the government.

"But it is also binding to Brussels, because they cannot go against a referendum.“

Hungary is led by eurosceptic president Viktor Orban, who had vowed to quit as the country's leader if he failed to win a majority.

And there was a blow to his pride with the voter turnout at just 42 per cent, well below the 50 per cent threshold required to make the referendum valid in Hungarian law.

The result means that more than three million people voted to reject the quotas, but one election analyst still described the vote as a "fiasco" for Mr Orban, who staked his reputation on a strong public backlash against the EU.

But a triumphant Mr Orban roared back: "The results of the referendum are great. This will be a strong enough weapon for us in Brussels.

"Hungary voted to keep its freedom, its right to decide who we want to live together with, and we decided that we won’t give this right to Brussels.

"We can be proud that Hungarian people were the first to be given the right to express their opinion on Brussels politics."

Hungary’s Hiring 3000 ‘Border Hunters’ To Keep Muslim Invaders Out

(TheDC) Hungary’s Prime Minister is hiring 3,000 “border hunters” to police its new border wall, as the nation votes on a European Union migrant quota referendum.

The new border hunters will be equipped with trucks, night vision goggles, and sniffing dogs. Hungarian officials defend the hires saying they will augment Hungary’s border police by also manning watch towers.

“Every single migrant poses a public security and terror risk,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban previously told reporters. The nation-wide referendum is expected to reject the EU migrant quotas, which decide how many migrants each member state must take.

The government’s referendum campaign has undertaken a concerted get out the vote effort with slogans like “Since the beginning of the migration crisis, harassment against women in Europe increased dramatically,” and “Since the beginning of the migration crisis more than 300 people died in terrorist attacks in Europe.”

Hungary is in the midst of suing the EU for trying to force it to resettle nearly 1,200 migrants, joining EU member states Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. Hungary’s aggressive migrant policing practices have worked. The United Nations estimated nearly 13,000 migrants a day were entering the country before a fence was built. That number has fallen to a trickle of approximately 30 legal migrants per day, with very few illegals.

Hungary intentionally built its border wall a few feet from its legal international border, so that when it expels prospective asylum seekers it is not breaking international law. International law dictates that treaty signatories cannot expel asylum seekers out of its borders.

“It is a basic right that if a person wants to ask for asylum, they have the right to cross the border in an irregular manner and make such a request,” a UN spokesman deriding the practice told The Washington Post.

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers set off on foot Friday toward Serbia's border with Hungary to protest its decision to keep its border closed for most people trying to reach the European Union.

Migrants held cardboard placards saying "Hungary Open Borders" or "No Borders, No Fence" as they marched Friday in a long column along a road leading north from Belgrade toward the Hungarian border 200 kilometers (120 miles) away.

Several police cars drove slowly by the marchers, who were carrying bags and blankets. Most migrants appeared to be young men who stand little chance of entering Hungary or other EU nations.

Hungarian PM: Hungary's constitution bans "Islamization"

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary's constitution bans "Islamization" because the document aims to protect Hungarian language and culture, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Monday.

Orban also said the constitution forces the government to oppose any kind of mass migration that would endanger those principles.

"To be clear and unequivocal, I can say that Islamization is constitutionally banned in Hungary," Orban said in parliament at an event celebrating the fifth anniversary of Hungary's new constitution, now known as the Basic Law.

Orban was quoting from the National Avowal, the Basic Law's preamble, which details the country's commitment "to promoting and safeguarding our heritage, our unique language, Hungarian culture" and the protection of "the living conditions of future generations."

Hungary maintains that the migrant issue is a matter of national sovereignty.

"We have the right to choose whom we want and don't want to live with," Orban said.

Hungary has built razor-wire fences on its southern borders to stop migrants from passing through to other European nations. Orban has said he wants "zero" migrants in the East European nation.

Before the fences, nearly 400,000 migrants entered Hungary in 2015 on their way to richer nations in Western Europe.

Hungary has sued the EU at the European Court of Justice to avoid having to take part in an EU plan to resettle migrants. The government is also organizing a national referendum over the EU quotas, meant to rally political support for its anti-immigrant position.

Hungary Against Taking Even a ‘Single Syrian’ from Germany

(Bloomberg) Germany shouldn’t send back refugees to the their first point-of-entry in the European Union based on the bloc’s Dublin accord, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said, according to an interview with MTI news service.

“The Dublin system is dead since apart from a few exceptions, countries aren’t abiding by its terms,” Szijjarto said on Wednesday, according to MTI. “Not a single Syrian” should be returned from western Europe to Hungary, he said.

Hungary has built a razor-wire fence along its southern border to keep refugees out and has been the staunchest critic of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s open-door policy to welcome an estimated million migrants this year, mostly refugees from Syria.

Slovakia putting temporary border controls in place

BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - Slovakia has introduced temporary controls on its borders with Hungary and Austria, the Interior Ministry said on Monday after Germany introduced similar measures over the weekend to cope with thousands of asylum seekers arriving every day.

The ministry said it would strengthen its border forces with an additional 220 police officers. It said it was monitoring the situation and coordinating with authorities in neighboring Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

UN: Hungary taking migrants straight to Austrian border

Budapest (AFP) - Hungary has effectively stopped registering thousands of migrants crossing the border from Serbia and is transporting them straight to the Austrian frontier, the UN refugee agency said Monday.

"Our information is that special trains are taking migrants from Roszke (train) station direct without stopping to the Austrian border," Erno Simon, UNHCR Regional Representative for Central Europe, told AFP.

He said this was "approximately a four-hour journey, yesterday (Sunday) three such trains left carrying at least 2,000 people. During the night our colleagues saw police waking people up at the border collection point."

EU on collision course over plans to share out migrants

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union members were on collision course on Monday over proposals to distribute asylum-seekers across the continent, a plan back by safe-haven Germany but resisted by several ex-Communist states in the east.

Interior ministers will meet on Monday afternoon in an emergency council called to deal with the unprecedented influx of migrants, which has overburdened Italy, Greece and Hungary.

Diplomats said after talks in Brussels on Sunday that Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic were refusing to accept the compulsory distribution of 120,000 asylum seekers - even though Hungary, which has taken in large numbers, would benefit.

Germany doing checkpoints on roads from Austria

German police say they will conduct rolling checkpoints on major roads coming from Austria in a search for asylum seekers, but will not check every vehicle and driver for passports.

Bavarian police official Mathias Knott said the controls "are flexible in terms of where and when they will be in place." Knott was speaking on the side of the major A8 highway connecting Salzburg, western Austria, with the German cities of Munich and Stuttgart.

Knott said police would vary their checkpoints depending on where large numbers of asylum seekers are expected to be crossing by road.

On the German side of the A8 motorway border crossing, officers placed warning lights and cones on the road and selected individual vehicles to be searched. The extra security backed up traffic for three kilometers (two miles) on the Austrian side of the border.

On trains inbound from Austria, meanwhile, German police were removing asylum seekers from the trains at the first German station reached and placing them on buses bound for refugee accommodation nationwide.

Hungarian police block key crossing for migrants

Dozens of Hungarian police have moved onto the rail line near Roszke that has been migrants' major border crossing point, getting ready to close the remaining gap in the country's 110-mile (177-kilometer) border fence.

Hundreds of migrants seeking to enter Hungary along the rail line have been halted in their tracks as engineers on a truck string barbed wire along steel fence posts. A police helicopter is hovering overhead.

Police are telling migrants to head through farm fields to Hungary's nearest approved border crossing, a road 2 kilometers (1 mile) to the west.

Police say they plan to block the rail line itself later with a train cargo container covered with seven coils of razor wire.

EU nations agree to share 32,000 refugees, another 120,000 under discussion

European Union nations have agreed on an initial relocation of some 32,000 refugees away from Italy and Greece to other nations in the bloc.

The total still stops short of the 40,000 initially sought, and is only a small part of the relocation of another 120,000 refugees under discussion Monday at an extraordinary meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels.

Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn of Luxembourg said the first relocations could start "quickly." The EU nations had already agreed in principle on the number last July.

The ministers also agreed the nations taking on the burden of relocation would receive a lump sum of 6,000 euros ($6,750) per refugee.

Poland stands ready to impose border controls

WARSAW - Poland is ready to impose controls at its borders with other European Union members in case of any threats to border security, Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said on Monday.

She also said she told European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker that Poland would not agree automatic quotas for accepting migrants and that Warsaw demands a strengthening of controls at EU's external borders.

"As soon as I receive (any) notification of any threat (to border security), Poland will start controlling its borders," Kopacz told reporters. "We will accept only as many refugees as we can afford, not a single one more or less," she said.

Norway's local elections test welcome for Syrian refugees

OSLO - Norway's anti-immigration Progress Party may be facing its worst election result in 20 years in municipal voting on Monday as its hostility to Syrian refugees leaves it out of step with a more welcoming mood in the Nordic nation in the last month or so.

Progress has sought to turn the municipal election into a vote on a plan it opposes to take in 8,000 Syrian refugees by the end of 2017, arguing that locally elected politicians could simply refuse to accept refugees.

Tough new immigration laws are due to take effect on September 15, and Orban warned that those who cross the border illegally will be arrested, Reuters reported. Hungary is struggling to cope with an influx of some 150,000 migrants so far this year, part of the wider European refugee crisis.

Hungary says may declare state of crisis over Muslim migrants

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary's Interior Ministry has proposed the declaration of a "state of crisis due to mass migration" as of Sept. 15, based on bills passed last week, Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff said on Thursday.

The proposal will be the first item to be discussed at a government meeting on Sept. 15, Janos Lazar told a weekly news conference.

More than 160,000 migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Asia and Africa have entered Hungary from the south this year, heading towards richer European Union states, mainly Germany.

The new bills make crossing a border fence which is under construction a criminal offense and allow authorities to fast-track the assessment of asylum applications at the border.

Austria says time to phase out emergency measures on migrants

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann said on Sunday it was time to phase out extraordinary measures allowing the unimpeded inflow of thousands of migrants from Hungary to Austria and Germany.

"We have always said this is an emergency situation in which we must act quickly and humanely. We have helped more than 12,000 people in an acute situation. Now we have to move step by step away from emergency measures towards normality in conformity with the law and dignity," he said in a statement after "intensive talks" with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a telephone call with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
