WHO: Ebola death toll rises to 4,546 in hardest-hit countries

GENEVA (Reuters) The death toll in the Ebola outbreak has risen to 4,546 out of 9,191 known cases in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.

A further 20 cases including eight deaths in Nigeria, and one non-fatal case in Senegal, have also been recorded, it said.

In addition, Spain has recorded one local Ebola infection and the United States has three confirmed cases including one death, the WHO said in its latest update.

The death toll for the three countries with intense transmission of the virus includes 62 more deaths than on Wednesday. There are 239 health workers among the fatalities.

Earlier on Friday, the WHO declared an outbreak in Senegal officially over, after twice the maximum incubation period of 21 days had passed. A similar WHO statement on Nigeria is expected on Monday after the requisite 42 days.

A separate Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo, from a different strain of the virus, has claimed 49 lives out of 68 known cases, the agency said.

Obama signs executive order authorizing Pentagon to send National Guard and reserve troops to Ebola countries

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Thursday authorized the Pentagon to call up reserve and National Guard troops if they are needed to assist in the U.S. response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Obama signed an executive order that allows the government to call up more forces and for longer periods of time than currently authorized. There is no actual call-up at this point.

The U.S. has committed to send up to 4,000 military personnel to West Africa to provide logistics and humanitarian assistance and help build treatment units to confront the rapidly spreading and deadly virus.

Patient with Ebola symptoms transferred to Boston hospital

The patient said he has recent;y traveled to Liberia.

(Reuters) - A patient in Massachusetts who recently returned from Liberia and was displaying symptoms of Ebola was transferred from a medical clinic to a Boston hospital on Sunday, the hospital said.

The patient reported to the Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates hospital in Braintree, Massachusetts, complaining of a headache and muscle aches, said Ben Kruskal, a physician and chief of infectious disease, in a statement.

The patient has not been confirmed to have the deadly virus.

"Out of an abundance of caution we immediately notified authorities and the patient was securely removed from the building and put into an ambulance now headed to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center," Kruskal said.

Kruskal said the Braintree building was closed briefly but reopened. "We are working closely with the Department of Public Health who will determine next steps," he said.

Fire and ambulance services responded to the hospital and put an Ebola protocol in place, said William Cash of the Braintree Fire Department. He said the patient is a male.

The current Ebola outbreak, the worst on record of the disease, has killed more than 4,000 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea in West Africa.

The development in Massachusetts comes hours after the announcement that a Texas health worker contracted Ebola after treating a Liberian man who died of the disease at a Dallas hospital last week.

Texas health care worker tests positive for Ebola; New Jersey officials order 'symptom-less' NBC News crew into Ebola quarantine

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas health care worker who was in full protective gear while providing hospital care for an Ebola patient who later died has tested positive for the virus and is in stable condition, health officials said Sunday. If the preliminary diagnosis is confirmed, it would be the first known case of the disease being contracted or transmitted in the U.S.

Meanwhile, a top federal health official said the health care worker's Ebola diagnosis shows there was a clear breach of safety protocol and all those who treated Thomas Eric Duncan are now considered to be potentially exposed.

(Reuters) - Members of an NBC News crew who worked with a cameraman who contracted Ebola in Liberia have been quarantined, New Jersey health officials said on Saturday.

Officials said the order was issued late Friday after the crew members violated an agreement to voluntarily confine themselves. They said none of the team has exhibited symptoms of the often fatal disease since returning from Liberia, one of three West African countries at the epicenter of the outbreak.

The Left's modern Britain: Anger at how parents block Ebola risk child from school

(Stockport) Miriam Mason-Sesay works for the UK charity EducAid in Sierra Leone, and twice a year she returns to the UK to fund-raise, and when she does, she brings her son, 9-year-old Kofi Mason-Sesay, with her, and he is schooled in a British school. However, this year, when parents found out that she and her son, who arrived from Ebola rife Sierra Leone only last week, objected to her son been schooled alongside their children.

In response, the headmaster of St Simon's school, Elizabeth Inman, wrote an open letter to all the parents (but allowed the press to have a copy), berating them for their action. I quote:

"It is with great sadness that we decided to cancel the visit; the misguided hysteria emerging is extremely disappointing, distracting us from our core purpose of educating your children and [it] is not an environment that I would wish a visitor to experience... "It is unfortunate that some misplaced anxiety and misinformation about Ebola, amongst a small group of parents, has been circulated amongst the wider parent body. The school has sought, and received, assurances from the relevant health agencies that the visit would pose no risk to health. Despite these assurances, this has not alleviated the concerns of the group, leading to the cancellation."

Typical left-wing stance - blame the parents for trying to protest their children. This mother and her children arrived from a very high risk Ebola area last week. It has an incubation period of up to 21 days, and while I hope to god that they are both clear, how many parents would take the risk of allowing their child to become infected? Exactly. Yet to the left, this can only be a human rights crime.

Strangely enough, the UK is sending 750 troops to the country in which to operate a decontamination hospital for health workers who become infected. I wonder if the decision for that was made on how a nurse in Spain became infected with this disease. Yet to the left, anybody who objects to anybody from this region coming to live amongst them can only be a... bigot.

(FPM) In 2009, Obama lifted the ban on AIDS cases entering the United States. Describing HIV as “a virus that has touched lives,” he announced that he was ending a ban based on “fear rather than fact.”

Obama didn’t specify what new facts about AIDS had been discovered that made it no longer infectious or a threat to public health. Instead he just had the CDC remove HIV from the list of “communicable diseases of public health significance.” Was HIV no longer of “public health significance”? The amount of money being lavished on it indicated otherwise. Was it then suddenly no longer communicable?

The CDC awkwardly tried to explain why syphilis, gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted diseases were still on the list, but HIV wasn’t. The answer could be summed as “because Obama said so.” The CDC did promise to “consider other diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases, for scientific review.” But most STDs don’t have their own billion-dollar lobby that can make or break politicians.

In a cage match between public health and politically correct cash, the winner was AIDS. And so the ban was lifted and immigrants no longer had to be tested for HIV.

But Obama was not a one-disease politician. He was also open to being touched by other viruses. The same year that his CDC decided that AIDS was no longer a communicable disease, Bush era quarantine regs were also scrapped. The regs had been part of an Avian Flu response that Senator Obama had demanded when he was cynically maneuvering for political advantage. But that was then. This is now.

In a bid for amnesty, Obama opened the southern border and flooded America with dangerous diseases.

The commitment to open borders had clear viral consequences. Border agents have already come down with antibiotic resistant infections carried by illegal aliens and in some cases passed these diseases on to their children. Also along for the ride was Swine Flu, a potentially fatal and communicable disease.

Obama had declared Swine Flu a “national emergency” around the same time that he was putting out the welcome mat for AIDS. But in his push for amnesty, he also welcomed Swine Flu into the country.

And that was just the beginning.

An Enterovirus D68 outbreak, that has now claimed the life of an American child, followed. The death took place in New Jersey, which has one of the highest rates of unaccompanied alien minor placements and possibly the highest rate when accounting for territorial size. Some D68 cases appeared to be linked to a mysterious condition in Colorado causing paralysis and spinal cord abnormalities in children.

As horrifying as these public health crises caused by Obama’s open borders policy are, the real nightmare may still be coming.

And if not, well, the Democratic Party’s voters have to come from somewhere. Who cares if they happen to be vomiting up blood while they’re casting their vote?

If AIDS can magically stop being a “communicable disease of public health significance,” why not Ebola? Why not any and every epidemic that might potentially keep a future Democrat out of Chicago?

As with AIDS, Obama is taking the line that Ebola has to be stopped at its source in Africa and that keeping the infected out of America will somehow interfere with this mission. It’s the sort of reasoning that makes a lot of sense to someone who views borders and nations as outdated relics. It doesn’t, however, make much sense to most Americans who still think there is such a thing as the United States.

The media, which can stir up a mass panic over a fly in a restaurant, is warning of “Ebola-phobia” and assuring the country that there’s no reason to fear an outbreak. Ebola isn’t really all that contagious, say all the same media outlets which have been claiming that AIDS and leprosy aren’t all that contagious. But then again no disease carried by Democratic Party voters can be considered truly contagious.

Saudi Arabia bans from hajj people from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea amid Ebola fears

There will be two million Muslims and all it takes is one person infected with Ebola to spread it to the entire world. What could go possibly wrong? Also, let's not forget that Mers is still available.

The hajj started Oct 2, 2014 and will end on Oct 7, 2014, then we will have to wait 21 days to see if anyone passed Ebola.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi Arabia sought to assure the public that the kingdom was safe and free of health scares as an estimated 2 million Muslims streamed into a sprawling tent city near Mecca on Thursday for the start of the annual Islamic hajj pilgrimage.

Earlier this year, Saudi authorities banned people from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea — the countries hardest hit in the Ebola epidemic — from getting visas as a precaution against the virus. The decision has affected a total of 7,400 pilgrims from the three countries.

Ebola is believed to have sickened more than 7,100 people in West Africa and killed more than 3,300, according to the World Health Organization.

Eight killed in an attack on Guinea Ebola education team

They were trying to educate people on how not to catch Ebola. Simple things like don't touch the sick or the dead. Wash your hands with soap. Three had their throats slit.

CONAKRY (Reuters) - Eight bodies, including those of three journalists, were found after an attack on a team trying to educate locals on the risks of the Ebola virus in a remote area of southeastern Guinea, a government spokesman said on Thursday.

"The eight bodies were found in the village latrine. Three of them had their throats slit," Damantang Albert Camara told Reuters by telephone in Conakry.
