(Wien) On Friday (20 January) afternoon the Austrian
counter-terrorism unit Cobra arrested a man suspected of planning a terrorist
attack in Vienna, the arrest came after Austrian authorities were alerted by
foreign intelligence agencies of a possible attack. Austrian interior minister
Wolfgang Sobotka later told the press that the arrested man, an 18-year-old,
was an Austrian citizen of a Albanian background. He added that the man was
under observation for some days as there were indications of jihadist motives:
"Our police forces managed in quick time to arrest a suspect and so prevent a potential terror attack in the federal capital Vienna. The leads came from foreign intelligence services."
The Kronenzeitung newspaper later published online adocument from the interior ministry saying that a group of "radical
Islamists of Albanian origin" intended to launch an attack in Vienna.
Police have followed up the above arrest with numerous raids in which arrested his fellow jihadist mates.
