You have to love how when 100,000 protested Mubarak, Obama was calling on him to step aside in about 5 minutes. Now, when some 17,000,000 demand Morsi go, Obama defends him. You know, the right side of history and stuff.
(FPM) At a crucial moment, Obama demanded that Mubarak step down. At an equally crucial moment, Obama has stepped in to back Morsi.
Obama said the White House is “concerned” about the outbreak of violence in Egypt and is monitoring the situation closely. But the president said Morsi’s election was “legitimate” and called on all parties in Egypt to return to the negotiating table.
“Our position has always been, it’s not our job to choose who Egypt’s leaders are,” Obama told reporters in Tanzania. “When I took a position that it was time for Egypt to transition [away from Hosni Mubarak in 2011], it was based on the fact that Egypt had not had democratic government for decades, if ever. And that’s what the people were calling for.”
The people in equal numbers are now calling for something else.
And Obama did not tell Mubarak that he had to stand for elections. He told him that he had to step down. That’s a very big difference.
Obama’s claim that he does not choose Egyptian leaders. He chose Egypt’s leaders when he made sure the Muslim Brotherhood would be at his Cairo speech.
Obama chose Egypt’s leaders when he pushed for Mubarak’s immediate resignation leaving the Brotherhood as the only organized force capable of stepping into the power vacuum.
Obama chose Egypt’s leaders when he rewarded Morsi with aid and weapons, shoring up his regime. And he’s still backing him now.
That’s a choice.
Back in the day, Obama claimed that America was hated because it backed tyrants. Obama is backing another tyrant in Egypt. But this tyrant is an Islamic tyrant.
It’s not about democracy. It’s about Islam.
