Russian Oscar class submarine catches fire in port

(SeverodvinskAn Oscar II nuclear powered submarine (K-266 Oryol) has caught fire in a shipyard in Russia’s northern province of Arkhangelsk whilst undergoing maintenance work. It is believed that the rubber anechoic tiles used to muffle the sound of the submarines caught fire due to welding work.

The Oscar class submarine is a cruise missile carrying submarine, and as such carries 24 P-700 Granit surface-to-surface cruise missiles. With a range of just under 400 miles, they pack a 750 kg warhead which can be either HE or Nuclear.

The most noteworthy Oscar II submarine was the Kursk which went down with all hands (118)  in Aug 2000.
