(Gaza City) Buoyed by the success of the Islamists in Egypt, the democratically elected government of the state-let (which took overall control of Gaza not by the ballot box but by the gun) has informed the great unwashed that actually they liberated Gaza in 2005, and with that news they are going to cut all ties with Israel. Including, I should add, replacing all its Israeli gas and electricity imports with Egyptian ones.
I suppose that the cancelling of the Israeli gas contract this past year leaves Egypt with a surplus of methane on its hands. However, how they expect to get paid selling gas to Gaza is another thing. (Just ask Fatah.)
The thing is, while the liberals and their ilk bitch about the siege of Gaza (really?), the fact remains that to get in and out of the tiny state is easy than getting into the UK. (Which, let's be honest, isn't that bloody hard). Not only that, but 4,000 aid trucks come in from Israel on a monthly basis, and 300 truck loads of Gaza produce leave for Western markets via... Israel. Let's not forget the free hospital treatment afforded to Gaza residents by Israel. But if that constitutes a siege by those on the left of the political divide, who am I to argue?
Hey, I'm not saying Israel is squeaky clean in its treatment of its Arab neighbours, but let's be honest here - they treat their enemies a lot better than the neighbours treat their so called brothers. I'm sure that Egypt is looking forward to the day when they have to feed 5 million ungrateful layabouts.Equally I'm pretty sure Israel can't wait to close the door on them.
