(UK) A thug who controlled his partner's social life and forced her to run on a treadmill every day has been jailed for two and a half years in a historic ruling.
Mohammed Anwaar forced his partner Gemma Doherty to run daily to lose weight, and showed her pictures of other women's bodies, telling her she didn't look as good as them. He vetted and restricted who she could see, what she was allowed to wear and made her behave how he wanted through fear, a court has been told. Mohammed, 27, pleaded guilty to a new charge of controlling or coercive behaviour, which was only brought in at the end of the year.
Taking into account Mohammed's previous convictions, which included several assaults causing actual bodily harm to other men, Judge Julian Goose, QC, sentenced Mohammed to 16 months in prison for the assaults and criminal damage, and 12 months for the controlling and coercive behaviour. He also imposed a five-year restraining order.
