Merkel tells Europe: Germany can't cope with migrants alone
LEIPZIG, Germany (Reuters) - Europe must share responsibility for coping with mass migration, Germany's chancellor said on Sunday, cautioning that her country could not shelter those who moved solely for economic reasons.

"Germany is willing to help. But it is not just a German challenge, but one for all of Europe," Angela Merkel told a gathering of trade unionists. "Europe must act together and take on responsibility. Germany can't shoulder this task alone."

Striking a more skeptical tone on migration than in previous weeks, Merkel also warned that Germany could not shelter those who were moving for economic reasons rather than to flee war or persecution.

"We are a big country. We are a strong country. But to make out as if we alone can solve all the social problems of the world would not be realistic," she told a gathering of the Verdi trade union.

"We want to offer shelter to those who need it but we have to say to those who come for other reasons, for economic reasons, that they do not have a perspective of staying," she said.

8,000 migrants arrive in Austria on Sunday
About 8,000 asylum seekers have gathered in the Austrian border town of Nickelsdorf, most of them crossing over from Hungary on Sunday.

They all lined up in a town square waiting for buses to relocate them. Austrian soldiers formed a barrier around them while local officials struggled to find accommodation for them because many camps were already overcrowded.

Croatia says 27,000 migrants have entered
Croatian police say about 27,000 migrants have entered the country since the surge started several days ago.

Police said Sunday that they are still expecting many more migrants to arrive from Serbia in the coming days. They say authorities are setting up tents for migrants to find shelter from rain and cold.

Migrants hoping to reach Western Europe started going through Croatia last Wednesday after Hungary pushed them away from its border with Serbia.

Clueless morons at Serbia gay pride march call for solidarity with Muslim migrants
BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Hundreds of gay and human rights activists at Serbia's gay pride event have called for solidarity with migrants passing through the Balkan country in search of a new life in Western Europe.

The pride march was held Sunday in the capital Belgrade under tight security with thousands of riot police in full gear deployed in the downtown area to protect the gathering.

Police say several extremists have been detained. In 2010 extremist groups and soccer hooligans attacked a pride march in the conservative Balkan country, triggering clashes that left more than 100 people injured.

A banner held at the march Sunday read "Europe, Open Your Gates" to the migrants fleeing war and poverty in their home countries.

Thousands more migrants pour into Austria as 13 drown off Turkey
Crowded aboard buses and trains, thousands more migrants flooded into Austria today as at least 13 desperate refugees drowned making the perilous trip to Europe in search of a better life.

Six children were among those who died off the coast of Turkey after the inflatable dinghy carrying them to Greece collided with a ship, Turkish media reported.

As several thousand more migrants arrived in Austria from Hungary via Croatia, Budapest abruptly decided to reopen a border crossing with Serbia whose closure on Tuesday had sparked a surge of migrants into Croatia.

The Horgos-Roszke 1 crossing is on the highway that before the migrant crisis engulfing Europe was the main route linking Belgrade and Budapest.

The closure added distance and uncertainty for those undertaking the gruelling journey across the Balkans into western Europe, with Croatia saying more than 25,000 had entered its territory in the past four days.
