German Police Gun Down Attacking Muslim Terrorist

(INN) German officials said Thursday that police shot and killed a “known Islamist extremist” after he attacked a German police officer in Berlin.

AP quoted Berlin prosecutor Dirk Feuerberg as sating that the 41-year-old attacker was “part of Berlin's Islamist scene.”

The report said that police were called after pedestrians in the Spandau neighborhood of Berlin reported on the man who was wildly waving a knife.

He attacked several officers, wounding one seriously before being shot and killed by another officer.

The attacker's name has not yet been released to the public, but reports said that the perpetrator had previously been sentenced to prison for belonging to an Islamist group.

The man had been released but ordered to wear an electronic tag, which he removed before the attack.
Until now, Berlin has not seen major Islamic terror attacks such as the 7/7 Tube bombings in London or the Charlie-Hebdo shootings in Paris.

The incident is likely to add to tensions over the influx of tens of thousands of Syrian refugees into Germany.
