France opens probe after raids on Islamist radicals who were planning "imminent attacks"

(France) Islamist militants arrested last week across France were planning ''imminent attacks'', according to Paris prosecutor Francois Molins.

On March 30, French police detained 19 people in dawn raids around cities including Paris, Toulouse and Marseille.

Two of those arrested, both women, were released the same day. The 17 arrested men, who belong to a group called Forsane Alizza, or Knights of Pride, had tried to procure weapons and posted videos ''that left no doubts as to the intentions of the cell'', Mr Molins said yesterday.

Some said they had discussed kidnapping a judge, he added. Mr Molins said the arrests were unrelated to Mohamed Merah, who murdered seven people in the Toulouse area last month.
