(Zanzibar) Yesterday, I just happened to mention in passing that 2 British schoolgirls had been attacked with acid on the Island of Zanzibar. But as the story had just broke, I left it at that.
The Island of Zanzibar is 98% Islamic. Two young British schoolgirls from North London (Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup) decided to spend some of their summer holiday helping a charity, which is why they found themselves on the Island teaching English at St Monica's nursery school. Now, the charity briefs all their volunteers on the sensitivity of dealing with Muslims, which is why both girls, as they walked through Stone town, were dressed respectably in a manner not to offend Muslims (but then what doesn't offend Muslim's?) However, that didn't stop 2 men from driving up to the girls and throwing acid in their faces. The BBC and the local police claim they don't know the reason for these attacks. In fact, on the BBC News last night the reporter was trying to push the angle that the girls had disrespected Islam in some manner. Well, he may have been right. You see, both girls are... Jewish. Anybody else presume that the peaceful followers of Allah, on finding out two very young girls were Jewish, just had to do their bit for the cause?
It transpires that the local police, after offering a £4,000 reward, have arrested 5 men, including a radical Islamic preacher. Well, what do you know...
