Iraq: Bomb kills police captain's wife and 4 children
BAGHDAD (AFP) — A car bomb has killed the wife and four children of a policeman in central Iraq, a day after 113 people died in the country's deadliest day in two and half years, police and medics said.Ramadan death count moves u to 746.
"Around 10 pm (1900 GMT), a car bomb blew up in the garage of the home of a police captain," said a police officer in Salaheddin province.
"While the police captain had gone out with one of his sons, a terrorist parked the booby-trapped vehicle in the garage, the door of which had been left open.
"Four of his children and his wife were killed, and four neighbours wounded," the officer said, adding that all the children were less than 10 years old.

India: 12 killed overnight in clashes between locals and Muslim settlers
GUWAHATI, India (AFP) — Indian police recovered 12 bodies from rice fields and roadsides in the remote state of Assam on Wednesday as the death toll from ethnic violence rose to 38 after four days of bloody clashes.Ramadan death count moves up to 741.
At least 170,000 villagers have fled their homes to seek shelter in relief camps, government buildings and schools to escape the unrest, which has raged since Friday with scores of homes burnt down by rioters.
Military reinforcements were called in to try to quell the fighting between indigenous Bodo tribes and Muslim settlers who have competed for years in long-standing territorial disputes.
"It appears all these 12 people were killed in overnight attacks," said Tarun Gogoi, the chief minister of Assam, a oil and tea-rich state in the northeast of India bordering on Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Syrian army bombards residential neighborhoods

Syrian forces fired artillery and rockets on Wednesday at the northern Damascus suburb of al-Tel in an attempt to seize it from rebels, causing panic and forcing hundreds of families to flee, residents and opposition activists said.
The 216th mechanized battalion headquartered near Tel started bombarding the town of about 100,000 people before dawn and initial reports indicated residential apartment blocks were being hit, they said.

Gunmen kill Pakistani Taliban commander linked to deadly attack

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Gunmen shot dead a Pakistan Taliban commander linked to an attack on a volleyball tournament in northwest Pakistan in 2010 that killed almost 100 people, officials said on Wednesday.Ramadan death count moves up to 729.
Maulana Ashraf Marwat was killed in Pakistan's Shaktoi area of South Waziristan near the Afghan border on Tuesday, said mourners at his funeral.
The identity of the gunmen was unclear.

Romney slams Obama for undermining Israeli leaders

(Ynet) Ahead of his first official trip outside the United States, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama of "shabby treatment" of Israeli leaders, and promised to be firm against Iran.
"President Obama is fond of lecturing Israel’s leaders," Romney said Tuesday in his first speech as an official presidential candidate. "He was even caught by a microphone deriding them. He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was. And even at the United Nations, to the enthusiastic applause of Israel’s enemies, he spoke as if our closest ally in the Middle East was the problem.
"The people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world. And the chorus of accusations, threats, and insults at the United Nations should never again include the voice of the President of the United States."

Obama administration announces creation of new major money pit - more solar energy projects
(The Hill) The Obama administration will open public lands in six Western states to more solar projects as part of a solar energy road map it publicized Tuesday.
The Interior Department set aside 285,000 acres in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah for the initiative. Firms can apply for waivers to develop projects on an additional 19 million acres.
Calling the announcement a “proud moment,” Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told reporters in a conference call Tuesday that it reaffirms Obama’s commitment to solar power. He noted public lands hosted no solar projects when Obama took office.
The administration has since approved 17 major solar projects on public lands producing about 6,000 megawatts of power, Salazar said.
“We have made huge strides in the last three-and-a-half years, but we realize we are only at the beginning of this effort and that there’s a lot more to do,” Salazar said. “I have no doubt that the United States will lead the world in solar energy development.”
Republicans want Obama to open public lands to more oil, gas and mineral drilling. They also oppose the president’s clean-energy push, saying it has done little to provide jobs when the country sorely needs them.

What honor looks like: WWII Vets with Honor Flight spontaneously cheered by travelers at Reagan National
On May 23, 2012, World War II veterans on an Honor Flight from South Carolina arrived in Washington DC to visit the WWII Memorial.
(MullerOver.com) Honor is a hard term to describe. It doesn’t have a color or weight or shape. If someone were to ask me what honor looked like, I’d probably struggle with what to say.
But something happened on May 23, 2012 at 9:31 a.m. at Gate 38 of Reagan National Airport that might change that. A flash mob of sorts broke out. But not like you’ve seen on YouTube with highly choreographed dance numbers or people singing a song in unison. In fact, virtually all of the participants of this “flash mob” didn’t know they would be participating until moments before it happened.
Let me explain. Shortly before 9:30 over the loud speakers, a US Airways gate attendant announced that an Honor Flight of World War II veterans would be arriving momentarily and encouraged anyone passing by to help greet them. Five or six people looked like they were officially part of the welcoming committee, and the rest of the people in the secure section of the airport were regular old travelers going somewhere. Then I had a terrible thought. What if these veterans came off the plane and just those five or six individuals were there to greet them. I walked a gate over to help see the veterans out.
But – then it happened and frankly, I wasn’t expecting it. All throughout the terminal, people left their gates and gathered around gate 38. A few active military personnel in plain clothes approached the gate attendant and politely asked if they could join in the salute within the jet way as the heroes first stepped off the plane. Every human being in the terminal stood at attention and faced the door.
Someone held up an old newspaper from 1945 that had a banner headline that said, “Nazis Quit!” And when I saw that newspaper, I realized that World War II wasn’t just a chapter in a history book. It was men and women who saw an evil like the world has never seen before and traveled across the world to meet that evil. And they defeated it.
I wonder if in 1945, any of those brave soldiers could ever imagine that 67 years later, we’d still be basking in the freedom that they preserved. And some of those heroes were about to walk through Gate 38.
The first soldier walked through the door. Old, frail and needing help walking. And every person I could see in the entire airport stood and applauded. No – maybe cheered is more like it.
But here’s the thing – the applause didn’t stop. For a full 20 minutes, as veteran by veteran stepped out of the jet way, the US Airways wing of Reagan National Airport thundered in appreciation. Travelers stepped out for the opportunity to shake their hand while others held back tears.
This is the America we picture in our heads. Heroes getting a hero’s welcome and those who enjoy the freedom adequately conveying their gratitude.
Now, I know what honor looks like.
Syrian forces attack mosque, kill 30 attending Ramadan prayers
AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian troops killed up to 30 worshippers as they were entering a mosque to attend Ramadan evening prayers in a village northwest of the city of Hama, opposition activists said on Tuesday.Ramadan death counter moves up to 728.
"Troops and shabbiha (militia loyal to President Bashar al-Assad) left the roadblock on the edge of Shariaa and crossed the main road and began firing automatic rifles at the worshippers as they were entering the mosque," Jamil al-Hamwi, one of the activists, said by telephone from al-Ghab Plain.
"We have confirmed the names for 15 bodies and it is estimated there is a similar number still to be collected from the streets," Hamwi, who uses a pseudonym for safety reasons, said.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two bombs killed nine people in Iraq late on Monday, police and hospital sources said, taking to 116 the death toll in a string of coordinated bomb and gun attacks against mostly Shi'ite Muslim targets.Ramadan death count moves up to 698.
A car bomb exploded near a cafe in the Shi'ite Ameen district in southeastern Baghdad, killing six men and wounding 24 others as they sat smoking shisha water pipes and drinking tea.
Three other people died when a roadside bomb went off near their mini-bus about 20 km (12 miles) west of Baquba, a city northeast of Baghdad. Seven others were wounded in the blast, police said.
The attacks took to at least 299 the number of people wounded in the bloodiest day of violence to hit Iraq this year.

Thirteen Afghan police, including commander, with weapons and equipment "defect" to Taliban

HERAT (Reuters) - An Afghan police commander and 12 junior officers have defected to the Taliban after poisoning seven comrades, government officials in the western province of Farah said on Tuesday.
The commander, named only as Mirwais, was in charge of a checkpoint in the Bala Boluk district when he and his unit defected to the Taliban and handed over their equipment and weapons, including military vehicles.
"He was a police commander for a checkpoint in Shewan village. He joined the Taliban with a Humvee, a Ranger (SUV), radios and 20 guns," said Abdul Rahman Zwandai, a spokesman for the Farah governor.
The seven police were poisoned because they refused to join the rebellion, he said. All were taken to the Farah hospital and an investigation would be launched.
