Ramadan Death Count: Iraq: 27/05/18

(Eebil)  A cockfight in Iraq's Al-Qādisiyyah Governorate resulted in the killing of 3 men with another 3 injured. Apparently the fight began with a simple quarrel between owners of the roosters in Al Diwaniyah city, and as this is the peaceful holy month of Ramadan they decided to settle their differences with  guns .

(Mosul)  A soldier was killed, while another was wounded in a confrontation with ISIS on the Iraqi-Syrian border, west of Mosul, Saturday.

(Anbar) Eight ISIS members were killed in airstrike carried out by the Iraqi army, west of Anbar, on Sunday.

(Mosul) Three ISIS terrorists were killed in an attack repelled by the pro-government paramilitary troops, south of Mosul, which also saw one service personnel killed.

(Zarka prison) Seven inmates have died of asphyxia in a fire started as part of a prison riot in Kurdish Northen Iraq instigated to cover a foiled breakout attempt, another 12 inmates are being treated for smoke inhalation. Apparently the riot was led by a convict sentenced to death on terrorism-related charges, who decided that his unholy cause wasn't worth dying for.

Syria: Assad Government bans Iran from using its Aircraft hangers.

(Damascus)  It appears the Syrian Government sick of losing military real estate assets to Israel these past few months (Especially aircraft hangers containing Iranans)  has now formally banned Iranians and allied Shiite militias from using its facilities and hangars in most of its military airbases. The decision appears to have been precipitated by the Russian President Vladimir Putin who met Bashar Assad on Thursday in the Russian resort city of Sochi. There, Putin stressed that foreign forces should leave the war-weary country for rendering success to the political process.

However another way to look at this could be the Syrians are sick to death of losing their anti-aircraft systems

Syria: Deadly bombings by ISIS sees 46 Soldiers killed, including 9 Russians.

(Damascus)  Whilst Syria (with the help of Russia) has turned the tide in its fight for the country as a whole, terrorists groups which held large areas of the country only a few months ago are on the back foot, having lost virtually all their so called caliphate. However a wounded dog is still a very dangerous animal and this was realised this week when  ISIS attacks on Syrian and Russian forces saw 76 soldiers killed this past week. ( I reported 30 killed on Tuesday)

The deadliest was on Wednesday, when IS targeted a group of Syrian and allied Russian fighters near the town of Mayadeen in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor where 35 pro-government forces killed, including at least nine Russians.

And a pair of IS assaults between Saturday night and Sunday morning killed at least 11 pro-regime forces in Deir Ezzor.

Somalia: Bitter fighting between 2 breakaway Somali states

(Mogadishu)  This past week the 2 northern autonomous regions of Somalia:  Puntland  and Somaliland have decided to play king of the castle over the ownership of Tuka Raq village, situated between the 2 regions and which Somaliland  took by force last month. The thing is, it isn't far from Puntlands capital of Garowe and  as honour is at stake both sides have been sending in armed men in which to win this latest chapter of 'King of the castle'

The first bout of fighting last week saw 63 people killed, this was followed last Thursday past with an additional 36 people killed. As is always the case the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the United States among other nations called for an immediate cease-fire and dialogue. However as the world has seen so many times before, honour for these people always overrules common sense.
