Israel: Two policemen killed and a third wounded by Palestinian terrorists

(Jerusalem) Three Arab gunmen went on the rampage this morning near the Lion’s Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City where they killed 2 policemen and injured another. The assailants, who were residents of Umm al-Fahm, near Haifa, armed with two homemade Carlo submachine guns and a handgun, shot at several police officers near the Lion’s Gate entrance to the site, before running into the compound. Police spokesman Luba Samri:
“When they saw policemen they shot towards them and then escaped towards one of the mosques in the Temple Mount compound,” police spokesman. “A chase ensued and the three terrorists were killed by police."
Police are investigating how the assailants were able to get their weapons, which included a handgun, two Carlo Gustav submachine, and a knife, past strict security. Footage of the incident shows the latter part of the gun battle where one of the assailants jump up off of the floor before being brought down by a fusillade of shots.

The two policemen who died of their injuries in hospital have been named as Advanced Staff Sergeant Major Kamil Shanan, aged 22, and Advanced Staff Sergeant Major Hail Sattawi, who was 30. They were Druze from Israel's northern Galilee region.

The area has now been cleared of visitors and closed, with police announcing that Muslim Friday prayers, usually attended by thousands, would be cancelled for the first time in 17 years.
