Iran: 12 killed as Islamic State attacks parliament and shrine

(Tehran) 12 people have been killed and many more injured in the Iranian Capital when terrorists launched attacks on the Iranian parliament and on the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic.

The assaults began in the mid-morning when four gunmen dressed as women burst into the Parliament complex in the centre of Tehran with Kalashnikov rifles and pistols, killing a security guard and another person. Soon after the assault on Parliament, two gunmen entered the grounds of Imam Khomeini’s Mausoleum, a few kilometres outside Tehran, killing a gardener and wounding several other people.

One detonated an explosive vest, while the other was shot dead.

ISIS has claimed responsibility and released a 24-second video purportedly shot inside the Parliament building during the standoff. Circulated online, the video shows a gunman and a bloody, lifeless body of a man lying on the ground next to a desk.

After 5 hours security forces brought the incident to a close. Iran is already pointing the finger of blame at regional rival SaudiArabia and the US. Yet conveniently omits that its forces in both Iraq and Syria are facing off against ISIS.

Ramadan death toll stands at 2,002.
