Israel: Leader of Palestinian Hunger strike, caught...eating

(Israel) For the past 3 weeks, around 1,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons have taken part in a huge mass hunger strike in which to demand better conditions. The strike has been instigated by Marwan Barghouti, the most prominent Arab prisoner and seen by everyone as a future Palestinian leader. Well, Barghouti's future chances of earning a truck full of aid cash as leader have been dealt a huge blow as videos of him actually eating on the QT have been released.

The nine-minute surveillance video released by the Israel Prison Service yesterday shows Barghouti, opening a white envelope and inspecting its contents before sitting down in the cell's toilet and closing the door. Whist the view the view is obstructed, the prison service have said the envelope contained cookies. The second part of the video, dated 5 May, shows Barghouti opening another envelope, walking to the toilet, and taking out what the prison service said was a snack bar. This time the door is left open and Barghouti appears to unwrap the bar, break off a piece and bring it to his mouth.

The head of the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, Qadoura Fares, called the video a fabrication, stressing Barghouti was being held in solitary confinement at Kishon prison and had no access to food.

Barghouti's wife, Fadwa, said Israel was "resorting to despicable acts" and warned that they would "increase the prisoners' insistence on continuing".

Barghouti, when asked if he had anything to say, refused as he still had his mouth full.
